Carhartt, Industry Leader Launch the Partnership for Electrical Safety

Carhartt has joined forces with other leading companies in the Arc-Rated (AR) & Flame-Resistant (FR) clothing and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) industry to launch of the Partnership for Electrical Safety (PES). As a member of PES, Carhartt will help ensure American electrical workers are protected from the hazards of electrical arc flash through access to appropriate arc-rated clothing and its associated PPE. Senior Vice President of Carhartt Company Gear, Andi Donovan, represents Carhartt on the Board of PES.

Electric arc flash, an electrical explosion resulting in a fireball of extremely high temperatures, can ignite flammable clothing and seriously burn exposed skin, causing catastrophic or fatal injury. Due to the nature of electrical work, arc-flash events will occur, but the most serious injuries are almost always caused by clothing ignition, not the arc-flash itself. The simple act of requiring AR/FR clothing will save lives, as currently roughly 40% of Americans working on or near energized electrical equipment do not have adequate protection.

The effort is well underway, with PES working directly with leadership at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as well as the key Congressional oversight committees. While the process may take some time to work through, as an industry leader in PPE, Carhartt is committed to supporting this important workplace safety effort.
