Rain Gear FAQ

Water-repellent gear can help you stay drier longer in light rain and drizzle through materials engineering or the application of a Durable Water Repellent coating or a combination of both. Waterproof gear keeps water out in steady or heavy rain using waterproof membranes, fully taped seams, and protective design features like storm flaps and structured hoods. Carhartt Storm Defender® gear is fully waterproof and designed for long-lasting coverage in tough conditions.

Breathable rain gear is designed to let sweat vapor escape while keeping rain out. This helps regulate body temperature and reduces that clammy feeling when you’re working hard in wet conditions.

Seam-sealed construction prevents water from entering through stitch holes created during manufacturing. Waterproof tape is applied over seams using heat and pressure to block leaks and keep rain from penetrating the garment.

DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent. It’s a surface treatment that causes water to bead up and roll off instead of being absorbed directly into the material—delaying the amount of time it takes for rain to soak through a garment.

To maintain waterproof performance, spot clean rain gear as needed to remove dirt, oil, and buildup that can clog breathable membranes. When washing, use a mild detergent, avoid fabric softeners, and tumble dry low to help reactivate DWR performance. Always follow care instructions for your specific garment.

The best rain gear for hot and humid conditions is lightweight, breathable, and built with ventilation features. Look for pit zips, mesh lining, and looser fits that allow heat and moisture to escape while still providing waterproof protection.

The best rain gear for cold conditions provides waterproof protection while allowing room for insulation layers. Look for gear that fits comfortably over base and mid layers or includes built-in insulation for added warmth in freezing rain or snow.

Strong winds can make the air feel up to 30°F colder than the actual temperature due to wind chill. The best rain gear for windy conditions includes wind-resistant or windproof materials that help retain body heat and improve overall comfort on the job. Cinched hoods, cuffs, and hems can also keep wind and rain out, improving comfort in windy conditions. Carhartt Wind Fighter™ technology helps reduce the impact of wind in exposed conditions.
